Equestrian Safaris (A separate Company)

Uto Farm was the base for Equestrian Safaris, a family owned company specialising in horseback safaris in the area. From 1987 to 2009, riding safaris started and ended at the farm. Rides lead West and North of Mt. Meru as far as the Kenya border at Sinya and to West Kilimanjaro at Ndarakwai. To the west, they reached Lake Natron and north to the Kenya border. Equestrian Safaris catered to experienced horsemen only.

The areas that can be reached on horseback lie in beautiful country and have a reasonable amount of wildlife. The endless space and lack of fences allow for long canters and gallops at the very foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro through the open savanna. The landscape and the bush provide a unique experience with almost no tourists.

At the Farm

The farm is one of the best locations in the region to keep horses. The cool climate, available grazing and water, coupled with a lack of insects, means that horses thrive here.  Day rides can be conducted on the farm and into the Meru Forest Reserve higher up the mountain. Here one might encounter the black and white Colobus monkey and enjoy the magnificent views and the cool air.

The farm has numerous large paddocks for rotation grazing and stables for over 30 horses.

The farm was the base for Polo Cross during the 1980's and 90's. Players later took up the sport of Polo in Tanzania and eventually established the Nduruma Polo Club on the other side of Mt Meru.
